Carroll math team wins championship

Photo provided For the 10th straight year, Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School's math team has won the Hoosier Heartland Conference math contest.

Carroll won the championship title on April 29 with a score of 1,233. Second place winner was Tri-Central with a score of 1,004. Other placings were: Rossville, third, 962 points; Lafayette Central Catholic, fourth; Clinton Central, fifth; and Clinton Prairie, sixth.

Each school sent a team of four students in each of five test categories: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. A total of 120 students participated.

There were two parts to the competition - an individual test lasting 60 minutes and a 45- minute team test where all four team members worked together.

Three types of awards were presented:

Individual ribbons were given in each test category for performance on the individual test.

Each test category had a champion based on the individual test results and the team test results in that subject.

An overall conference champion was crowned based on the total results of all five test areas. As conference champion, Carroll took home a traveling trophy for display until the next year's contest.

Carroll coaches are math teachers Gary Duff, Susan Abbott, Linda Harrold, and Ryan Duff.

Three of Carroll's teams placed first - Geometry, Pre- Calculus, and Calculus. Carroll's Algebra I team placed second, and the Algebra II team placed fourth.

Rossville's teams placed third in all five categories.

Individual placings for Carroll and Rossville are given below. Those in the top 10 in each category receive ribbons.

Algebra I: Carroll - Jackie Tussinger, first; Dan Budreau, fifth; Trey Overholser, seventh; Cory Seward, tie for ninth. Rossville - Jay Shideler, eighth; Quan Nguyen, tie for ninth.

Algebra II: Carroll - Kayla Tussinger, eighth. Rossville - Emily Villars, second; Abby Barnett, seventh.

Geometry: Carroll - Crystal Keck, first; Michael Myer, second; Patrick Forgey, third; Jared Collins, fifth. Rossville - Wes Delks, eighth.

Pre-Calculus: Carroll - Carson Spesard, first; Kevin Knaus, second; Travis Martin, fifth. Rossville - Leanne Shideler, seventh; Zach Briggs, ninth; Dane Snyder, tenth.

Calculus: Carroll - Angel Jackson, first; Morgan Yoder, second; Adam Tussinger, third; Aurora Shands, fourth. Rossville - Adam McIlrath, sixth.
