Comet photo by Jennifer Archibald For the fifth year in a row, Carroll Elementary has won the statewide Stock Market Game competition in the elementary division.

Carroll had three teams in the top 10 - capturing first, third, and seventh places.

Playing the stock market computer game is part of a 10- week project in Mike Hyman's fifth grade math class. There's a new competition for each semester.

The Stock Market Game is sponsored by the Indiana Council for Economic Education. The real stock market is followed, but no real money is used.

Members of this year's winning team are Rachel Morgan, Lacy Lewis, Shealyn Cripe, and Jason Retzlaff.

Third place team members are Cassidy Carman, Krystal Kenworthy, Nicole Heath, and Jakob Coulbern.

Seventh place team members are Jake Gamel, Justin Robertson, Joey Rose, and Jeffery Hayes.

The competition has three divisions - elementary, middle school, and high school. Carroll Elementary's top three teams were in the top 20 teams overall in the Lafayette region. Carroll's winning team placed 48th overall, out of 1,126 total teams in the competition.

Hyman said the students study the stock market by reading the stock market page in the newspaper, watching a cable TV program called "Fast Money," and researching stocks on the Internet.

Each team starts off with $100,000 in pretend money.

"I encourage them to buy stock in four or five different companies," Hyman said, "and to spend as much of the money as possible."

Without giving away all their secrets, Hyman said if the students want to win in a 10-week period, they have to buy very risky stock and hope that it goes up. He cautions that they might have a different philosophy if they were using real money.

Hyman said the members of the teams enjoy talking about their stock - what's going up and what's going down.

"Some of the students want to buy stock where their parents or grandparents have stock. It's their decision," he said.

Carroll's winning team turned their $100,000 into $102,313.67.

Hyman said in 2003, the Stock Market Game was nationwide. One of Hyman's teams was very successful, placing ninth in the country and coming out $30,000 ahead on their money.

"They bought stock in Gateway Computers that year, and the stock doubled," Hyman said. "Those students are now sophomores."

Although none of the money exchanged is real, this year's winning team got a real-money prize. JP Morgan, financial services firm, deposited $400 in a College Choice Investment Plan for each member of the winning team in the three divisions. As elementary students, the Carroll team has several years to watch their money grow.

Hyman will accompany the four students to the Stock Market Awards Banquet May 9 at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park.
