Committee working on HHH/ Deer Creek Valley solutions
Members of the committee by virtue of the Memorandum of Agreement signed by the Governor in 2004 are: Deer Creek Valley Rural Historic District, County Historical Society, Historic Bridge Coalition, Wabash & Erie Canal Association, Delphi Historic Trails, Delphi Preservation Society, City of Delphi, Carroll County. The two newest members of the committee are the Delphi mayor-elect and two new city councilmen. Discussion has centered on details of historically significant points in the Deer Creek Valley along with locations for five "trailhead" potentials. The trailhead locations had been outlined in a meeting with INDOT officials. The group can better visualize the valley with the road superimposed because of a new "birds-eye" drawing. It helps with prioritizing potential trail connections along with the need for a combination "Welcome & Interpretive Center" at the east entrance to the new highway. That is the point where Delphi's Main Street extends northeast to intersect the new highway. A recent meeting attracted 15 representatives of the local organizations plus the INDOT support people. Enthusiasm was exhibited for setting priorities on which trailhead and connection to town might be made. A date was picked to explore (walk) the site. The date is the day after Christmas and time is 1 p.m. at the Canal Center for departure by the trolley. The public is encouraged to join in this walk (weather permitting). Soon after the walk, the committee will get together again to pick out the theme, based on the response from the people attending the walk and filling out a response form. The public is encouraged to continue responding to any member of the lead organizations. |
