In Memoriam This is to honor the memory of
Ralph J. Rohrabaugh - the unofficial mayor of a small town that he would not let fall through the cracks, Camden, Indiana. He was a remarkable man and went through periods of unparalleled turmoil and triumph. He saw people move in, saw them move out, saw babies born and buried old friends, all while making a sleeping little town come alive. He was not only a historian and educator, but also a guider of life, rallied on progress and moved it on, which at times brought negative comments by others. He was not only our husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather; he was our friend and mentor. We loved him dearly as so many others did and miss him as much. A year has now passed but the pain is still the same. He made a difference in everyone's life whose path he crossed, he was not only unique in his own way, but unique in how he related to others throughout Camden and the surrounding communities. It takes a special person to grow with the times and cope, and he, throughout the years gave extraordinary possibilities to seemingly ordinary men and women to produce progress. He brought hope, showed kindness and caring, and lit the path for the lives he encountered throughout his life. Sometimes without warning, life gives us choices that will shape the future. On such occasions, the young and the old are unable at times to look far along the path, up ahead to that distant point where the two roads meet. That is where Ralph went into action as he was able to guide those in the choosing of the road to take before the junction was reached. He dealt with crisis and triumph and when the crucial of life's moments come like the "thief in the night"---- suddenly and without notice, the crisis is up on us and the moment of choice is at hand - this was a man on whom you could depend. We will always remember him for his big heart and generous attitude. He was a quiet man, unless he needed to be heard, and was not a showman. He was a trustworthy and levelheaded leader and friend, was a steady hand on the tiller through the choppy waters of our society, which is exactly what was needed for the future. The family would like to thank all of those who have shown acts of kindness, whether it be thoughts, prayers or physical. There are so many it would be unfair to list just a few. We would all like for you to continue to remember the unofficial mayor - the man in the van, who will forever live in our hearts. (CB) |
