Looking Back
Water from the Delphi Limestone Quarry is again filling the Wabash and Erie Canal in Delphi. The limestone company, the City of Delphi, and Wabash and Erie Canal, Inc. have agreed to release the water into the canal rather than divert it into the Wabash River, where it has been going recently. According to Jim French, president of the canal group, the water is being sent to the canal in hopes it will have a positive effect on the local water aquifers. Carroll County Pork Producers helped to make Christmas baskets fuller this year with their donation. Members donated 17 hogs which provided 1,700 pounds of ground pork and 300 pounds of ham. Distribution was made through county churches which provided Christmas baskets for families in need. 25 YEARS AGO A project of Delphi and area churches initiated through prayer and love in response to the gift of Christ was overwhelming.Very generous donations of cash, food, toys and time of eager working people resulted in the distribution of 128 boxes to needy families to make their Christmas more merry and meaningful. The basement of the Delphi Presbyterian Church looked like a grocery store and toy shop Friday before the donations were packed into boxes for distribution Saturday morning. Those who received them expressed their appreciation in many ways-words, smiles and tears. It gave them a great lift just to know someone cares. 50 YEARS AGO There was a bang-up time in the ole' town Friday night! More than 5,000 persons thoroughly enjoyed the unusual Christmas fireworks which proved to be a delight for young and old. Then, more than 2,000 children had a chance to see Santa Claus and receive free treats. Many compliments were received by merchants on the beautifully decorated store windows and numerous persons found ideal gift suggestions. Visitors felt the warm welcome and the sincere invitation to return extended to them. 75 YEARS AGO Basketball Results: Catholics 16, Presbyterians 9. Christians 26, Methodists 12. It is the intention of the Pennsylvania company to have the depot completed by the new year. The officials of the road were here and talked over the situation with the citizens, it being decided that the building should be located on the east side of the track, midway between Main and Columbia streets; that a wide cement walk should be constructed both ways from the building to the street and the space of ground not covered by the building and lying between the two street, should be converted into a park. |
