Richard A. Scowden

Richard A. "Rick" Scowden, 71, of Delphi, passed away unexpectedly Dec. 9, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. in his home.

He was born Aug. 14, 1936, in Carroll County to Noah and Bernice Leffler Scowden.

Mr. Scowden attended Delphi High School. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He retired in 2002 from Purdue University after working in the janitorial department for 15 years in the school's co-recreational gymnasium. Prior to that, he worked at Jeff Boat Company in Jeffersonville.

He enjoyed fishing, vegetable gardening, hiking, outdoor activities and auto racing.

Surviving are two sons, Jeff Thompson of Jeffersonville and Ronald Scowden (wife: Bobbie) of Charlestown; a daughter, Dawn Scowden of Washington, Ind.; a brother, Robert "Bob" Scowden of Monticello; four sisters, Irma Sprunger of Punta Gorda, Fla., Dorothy "Dot" Mc- Cormick of Delphi, Helen Michael of Logansport and Katherine "Kit" Rehwald of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

Mr. Scowden was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Friends may call today, Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Abbott Funeral Home in Delphi. Services will be held there Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. and will be officiated by Pastor Jeff Tomson. Burial with Delphi American Legion and Delphi VFW military rites will be at Pretty Prairie Cemetery near Battle Ground.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
