Last days to sign up for Medicare Part D
Comet staff report

The Indiana Association of Area Agencies on Aging reminds older adults and persons with disabilities that there are just over two weeks to sign up for the Medicare Part D prescription drug program and find out if they are eligible for Extra Help to assist in paying premiums for the program.

The last day to sign up for or change plans is Dec. 31.

Melissa Durr, CEO of the association, said information about signing up for the plan would be included in the official "Medicare and You 2008 Handbook" that Medicare beneficiaries received in October. Information can also be obtained by calling 1-800- MEDICARE (1-800-633- 4227).

Individuals who require assistance in signing up for a plan can also call their local Area Agency on Aging at 1- 800-986-3505 to schedule a confidential appointment with a counselor to help them investigate the best plan for their individual needs. A list of all current medications and their dosages should be brought to the appointment along with the applicant's Medicare card, letters and other information from the applicant's Medigap insurance company, Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, as well as information about their current coverage if applicable.
