Bright National Bank at Burlington was the scene of a break in over the weekend. The burglary was discovered by the cleaning person.

According to the Sheriff's report, entry was gained by forcing open the back door. Once inside the suspect or suspects worked to open the vault, but were unsuccessful. Bank officials determined that nothing was taken. A second attempt to force open the back door of the bank was discovered Monday morning when bank employees arrived for work. The vault, which weighs several thousand pounds, had only superficial damage.

Citizens of Carroll County will soon receive full benefit of a new police unit, the Carroll County Police Department Reserve.

The reserves will not only be responsible for traffic control, but will be assisting the sheriff's department in other capacities such as in the civil process service, as radio dispatchers and performing routine road patrol.

Santa will arrive by helicopter near the intersection of Franklin and Washington streets in downtown Delphi on Saturday. From there he will go to the rotunda of the courthouse where boys and girls may take their Christmas letters and visit with Santa.

Isaac Childers, well known Deer Creek township farmer brought to the Journal office the largest turnip ever exhibited in Delphi as far as known. It weighs seven and one-half pounds and as Mr. Childers states it looks like it would make a fir sized bowl were it made into a drinking cup.

Two policemen investigating a death looked at their subject and called the coroner.

As the coroner's car approached, siren screaming, the patrolmen went outside to meet it. They accompanied Dr. E.R. Wilson, deputy coroner, into the home of Mrs. Lola Ross, whom they had left lying on the floor, ostensibly dead. Lo and behold! Their subject was missing when they returned. She was sitting in a rocking chair in another room.

Mrs. Ross had just recovered from a faint.

Tuesday morning five of the balloons entered in the international race from St. Louis to New York, passed over Flora. And everybody took the advice of the Democrat and rubbered. One of the big balloons came near enough that the men who occupied it could be discerned with the naked eye. The one that passed over our city and Bringhurst was the big yellow balloon from Germany. Everybody here took a holiday until the balloons were out of sight. The school children were all allowed to be away from their studies. The balloons are racing for the James Gordon Bennet trophy and the winner receives $2,500 in cash besides.
