Carroll student to compete in district essay contest
Comet staff report

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar announces that Chad Griffin, a student at Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School, is a county-level winner in the 2007-2008 Dick Lugar Youth Essay Contest.

Eighth grade students throughout Indiana wrote essays focusing on this year's theme, "Energy Aware - Energy Independent."

Students were asked to consider the types of alternative energy available as Americans pursue energy independence and then describe how farmers can lead the way for a sustainable energy future. In addition, they were asked to consider how the focus on home-grown energy will impact Hoosier farmers, rural economies, and the nation's security.

A farmer and former businessman, Lugar created the Dick Lugar/Indiana Farm Bureau/ Farm Bureau Insurance Companies Agricultural Essay Contest as a way to teach Hoosier youth about the state's agricultural heritage.

County winners will now compete at the district level. District winners will be invited to attend the Indiana Farm Bureau State Convention Dec. 7 in Indianapolis, where they will be recognized for their achievements. State winners will also be named at the convention.
