"The more I walked, I got sicker…I knew many of these people…it's just sad," said Denis Horn, Horn Funeral Home Director, after discovering that the Masonic Cemetery had been devastated by vandals.

The preliminary investigation has determined that at least two individuals were involved as the weight of some of the overturned markers varied from 500 pounds to nearly one ton.

Military markers appeared to be intact, but 127 monuments, spires, and obelisks were overturned. Some were chipped and broken off from hitting other stones. Flower hangers were bent over and flower urns were upset.

Damage is estimated at least $10,000.

City police now carry a special "traffic ticket". It reads:

"Welcome to Delphi! We are a small, rural city located on the banks of James Whitcomb Riley's famous "Deer Crick". Down the hill and up the 'Crick' is where Mr. Riley wrote his famous "Ole Swimmin' Hole" poem. We like to pride ourselves with our wide streets, beautiful homes and friendly people. That's why we are extending this courtesy ticket to you. Your car is in violation of our city traffic ordinance but since you have come a long way, no fine is being assessed. Please be careful on the rest of your journey to obey all the laws governing traffic, whether standing or moving. You'll be assured of a safe journey home. Good luck and come again."
