Looking Back

Undoubtedly some farmer, probably from around Camden or east of there, had a shock when arrived at his destination with his load of cobs. About four miles west of Camden on SR 218 his load started leaking, and was a bad one. Two miles later there were no more cobs on the road and it appeared that the amount on the two-mile stretch probably was most of the load. 50 YEARS AGO The Delphi Lions Club members will make a clean sweep of the city next Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 selling brooms in a house to house campaign. Beside house brooms, there also will be ironing board covers, basket liners, push brooms and whisk brooms. The brooms are made in Indiana by blind workers and purchases will help keep a blind worker employed and also provide money to support local projects such as Cub Scouts. 75 YEARS AGO The Cutler schools, which have been closed about two weeks on account of scarlet fever, opened again Monday. Coxie Baumgarner, well known here, had the misfortune to break his right arm at the wrist while cranking his Ford. A rifle club has been organized at Camden and is to be known as the Camden Rifle Club. The shooting gallery is directly under the drug store. 100 YEARS AGO Up at Galveston, where the saloons have been shut off, a drug store has this sign: "Rattle snake oil 10 cents a glass." "What is that good for?" asked a customer. "Most everything, stranger," was the reply. "Three glasses will make you as rich as Rockefeller; four will make you outrun a railroad train and six will put you so high on Hallelujah hill you'll holler hello to the a angels and think the stars are fire coals to light your pipe with." He bought six. |
