School gearing up for viral threat
By Kevin Schnepp Staff writer

Safety and security at schools are high priorities, according to Delphi Community School Corporation (DCSC) administrators. Often those words bring to mind protection against human violence, but at Monday's meeting of the DCSC school board, protection from a different threat was discussed.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a type of staph infection resistant to antibiotics such as methicillin, oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin, was discovered in two students, according to interim superintendent Steve Sailor. He said the cases did not originate at the school, but it was important for the corporation to protect students, staff and visitors from the contagious infection's potential to spread.

"We have to be proactive about this," Sailor said.

He explained a plan of action in the event an in-school case was detected was almost complete. Hand sanitizers were installed at each school. High school locker rooms and other facilities underwent deep cleanings and will be cleaned again during school breaks. Information about prevention and treatment was sent to parents, coaches, student-athletes and bus drivers. Custodial staff received enhanced cleaning directives.

More information about MRSA can be found online at www.cdc.gov/ncidod/aip/research/ mrsa.html.

Track almost complete

Sailor announced the track facility was near completion. Aside from concrete for discus and shot-put to be poured next spring, he said the facility is ready to host track and field events. Board member Jerry Sparks requested a line item study to compare the project bid with the finished product. Robert Resler, board president, said he could have that information by the next meeting if the proper sources provide it in a timely manner.

School bus accident

A corporation school bus was involved in a two-vehicle accident recently. The driver of the other vehicle was cited. The bus received minor damage but no one was injured, according to Sailor. Rules enforcement questioned

Patron Sharon Milburn said she noticed individuals smoking on school property during Friday's sectional football game. She requested the policy of no smoking allowed on campus be enforced or removed.

Camden resident Everett Snoeberger asked if the drug testing policy had been used. Resler said no tests had been administered to his knowledge, but the fact that the policy was in place was a deterrent.

The next regular meeting will be Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in the corporation office. Work sessions are tentatively scheduled for Nov. 19, 26, and Dec. 3.
