DNR shelling out cash for acorns
Comet staff report

The DNR Division of Forestry's Nursery Program wants to buy acorns of several different oak species. If you have the right kind of tree, you could make some money.

The program distributes four million seedlings to Indiana residents every year for reforestation, wildlife enhancement, windbreak establishment and erosion control. All trees are grown from seed, most of which are collected from in-state sources.

Payment is based on a pergood seed basis from a thorough test of the seed lot by the forestry division. Each species must be kept separate.

The following is a list of species requested and price paid per good seed: • Chinkapin Oak - $0.0250; • Bur Oak - $0.0300; • White Oak - $0.0175; • Swamp Chestnut Oak - $0.0250; • Swamp White Oak - $0.0250; • Overcup Oak - $0.0250; and • Chestnut Oak - $0.0175.

Additional information can be obtained from Vallonia State Tree Nursery at (812) 358-3621 or Jasper-Pulaski State Tree Nursery at (219) 843-4827. Both are open Monday through Friday 8 a.m.to 4 p.m.
