Comet staff report

Osteoporosis is often a silent disease, causing bone loss and fragility. Every year the risk for having a fracture because of osteoporosis is greater than the risk for heart disease, stroke or breast cancer.

A simple, painless bone density test can tell your healthcare providerwhether you have osteoporosis. Women at risk are caucasians and asians over the age of 50 who are past menopause and have a family history of the disease. Other risk factors include smoking, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, steroid use for long periods of time, thin or small-frame body structures, low estrogen levels, reduced calcium intake and lack of exercise.
