Leaf pickup starts in Burlington

Leaf pickup for the Town of Burlingtonwas to have begun last week.

Public Works Commissioner Les Johnsonmade the announcement at theOct. 10meeting of the Burlington Town Council. Johnson has obtained additional help and requests patience from residentswhile this newprogramgets started.

Council President Robert Davis added that he worked with Johnson during training and that it will be learning process as this new program gets started.

Johnson also requested a "Children at Play" sign for Jackson Street. Johnson said he wasmaking the request for others who were concerned by the large number of children in that area.

Additional patrolling, and possible legal implications on signage were discussed before the Council requested town attorney Anne Briggs to review the situation and report back at the next meeting.

Davis and clerk-treasurer Tammy Dyer attended a Census sponsoredmeeting entitled Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA). Local governments are being asked to work with the Census Bureau to verify and correct local address information. Davis andDyer have initiated the necessary paperwork and certification to begin this process that will continue until the 2010 Census is conducted. Davis emphasized the importance of having correct Census information and how it affects local government funding.

Dyer reported on animal control. She said the board met recently with several township trustees to discuss possible solutions for countywide animal control since the county will cease funding the program in 2008.An estimated budgetwill be prepared and submitted for discussion at the group's Nov. 14 meeting.

Davis, Dyer and Marshal Jill Hammond, met recently with Ken Smith to start a $10,000 police equipment grant. They will also work with him to develop other available grants.

Davis welcomed Marshal Hammond back from medical leave. He then proceeded to share Deputy Kevin Hammond's September activity report.

Park Superintendent Mike Mann reported that he is obtaining quotes for weed spraying of park grounds. The Council commended Mann on keeping the park grounds in such good condition. Mann said thatmany volunteers haveworked at the park too.

Sana Booker, executive director of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, expressed her desire to keep in contact with Burlington and make periodic visits.

The next meeting will be Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the town hall.
