Donnelly presents flag to DCHS

Indiana 2nd District Congressman Joe Donnelly made an appearance at Delphi Community High School last Friday. Donnelly presented DCHS with a flag that formerly flew over Washington, D.C. He later answered student questions pertaining to pressing local and world issues.

City council member Randy Strasser opened the school ceremony and welcomed the congressman. Donnelly then thanked Carl Spear who served in World War II and Ron Kleckner, a veteran of Vietnam, for the VFW financial contributions, along with those of DCHS, to purchase the flag.

"We're not allowed to buy the flags for constituents" said Donnelly. "Ethics rules forbid us from being able to purchase them. But we thank all the guys that helped chip in - we appreciate this a great deal."

Approximately 50 government class students attended the ceremony. Donnelly said he has appeared at approximately 20 district schools so far this year and expressed the importance of governmental visitation in schools.

"It's your country. I want to leave a better country to you than the condition it is in right now. I want you to have every opportunity in the world. I want success to come to Delphi where we have a highway coming, bringing great jobs, and terrific opportunities," he concluded.

"Soon, one of you may be congressman. I won't be in this job forever. I want you to take full advantage of it. I want you to see that the future is important. If I can get you to see that, then this is what I want to do."

According to government teacher Aaron Fezzey, Donnelly is the second congressman he helped bring to DCHS.

Fezzey said attending students were applauded by Donnelly and school staff for the quality of questions asked and were later invited to join Donnelly's youth voting program.

"Donnelly and staff were impressed," concluded Fezzey. "Our students asked a lot of good questions. I'm proud of them."
