Police blitz ends with 11,000 citations issued for driving violations

Results have been released from the Governor's Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving and theTraffic SafetyDivision of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) for the recently concluded "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. UnderArrest." Labor Day crackdown.

Approximately 11,000 citations were issued statewide as a result of the increased enforcement during the impaired driving mobilization that began on Aug. 17 and concluded on Sept. 9.

In north central Indiana, nearly 1,400 hours of overtimewere put in by more than 130 officers during the campaign.The officers issuedmore than 1,300 citations for impaired driving and other moving violations.

Statistics for Carroll County's Traffic Safety Partnership are: 1 arrest for possession ofmarijuana, 3 arrests for consumption of alcohol by aminor, 2 arrests for public intoxication, 2 arrests for driving while suspended/prior, 1 arrest for invasion of privacy, 1 arrest for maintaining a common nuisance, 2 arrests for visiting a common nuisance, 1 arrest for reckless possession of paraphernalia.

According to theTraffic Safety Alcohol Fact Sheet fromtheCenter for Urban Policy and the Environment, 273 people, out of 899 total fatalities, lost their lives in traffic crashes in Indiana in 2006 due to an impaired driver.
