The first full week in October is National Newspaper Week. One of the themes this year is: "Encourage your child to read a newspaper everyday." This emphasizes the importance of perhaps the most single important work skill which translates directly into success, that of literacy and reading.

We urge all our readers to help others learn to read, to "pass it on."

Darla Zink, daughter of Charles and Jody Zink of Delphi, was crowned homecoming queen at the game Friday night.

Seed corn is being dumped at the Flora Seeds building, owned by Gutwein Seeds. This is the first year for production at the plant since it was owned by Pioneer. Harvest is expected to yield approximately 300,000 bushels of corn.

As this newspaper and every other newspaper in the United States, in the celebration of National Newspaper Week, let us remind our readers that - A Free Press is Your Key to Freedom.

To be informed in an objective and unbiased way is a privilege that Americans enjoy every time they read the newspaper.

It means that we have a right to know what is happening in our world, to speak out on the issues, to form opinions and to bring about change through our voting system.

That's what democracy is all about. It begins with our basic right to Freedom of the Press.

Any day now a door-to-door peddler may ring your bell and try to sell you some vitamins or nutritional supplements. He will be very convincing because he's a trained salesman. But keep this in mind. It is quite unlikely that your physician would ever prescribe his product. No matter what the peddler says, chances are, he lacks professional knowledge of what he's selling. So, if you need vitamin preparations (your physician is the best judge) get them from a registered pharmacist. Then you know what you're getting and you get your money's worth every time.

Carroll county girls have adopted a low down fad.

According to the clerks in local stores the fad of "autograph stockings" has hit here and girls are asking their chums to embroidery their names in silk of various hues on one of the stockings. The signature is written with marking ink, it is said, and then embroidered over. This peripatetic fad entails the handicap of the stockings not matching but the general effect, it is said, is harmonious.
