Local activities for body, mind and spirit
By Kevin Schnepp Staff writer

Those who enjoy a good walk do so for a wide variety of reasons. When the place they choose to walk offers a corresponding assortment of sights, sounds and history, the combination can create an adventure beneficial to body, mind and spirit.

Delphi Historic Trails will sponsor a healthy mixture of events in coming weeks to suit those who like to work, play, or simply and quietly take in the scenery.

Treaty of St. Mary's Walk

Those interested in history can enjoy a step back in time prior to pioneer settlement when special guests Erin and John Dunnagan speak Oct. 6 about the area's early founders and settlers and the Treaty of St. Mary's.

John is the Miami Nation Vice Chief and Tribal Historian. He is a descendant of Antoine Bondie, who owned a reserve along what is now Carrollton Rd.

Visitors will be escorted along Deer Creek, once inhabited by the Dunnagans' ancestors. Those interested should meet at Trailhead Park, located about one-half mile souhtwest of Delphi on SR25, at 2 p.m. Call Mark Smith at (765) 563-3349 or e-mail him at smith4881@earthlink.net for information. Old highways and scenic byways drive

Hop on board the trolley Oct 14 at 2 p.m. at 313 S. Washington St. (parking lot across from Delphi Body Works) and enjoy an escorted drive along the former Delphi to-Frankfort Plank Rd. to the bygone town of Prince William, then on to Lexington and Ball Hill cemeteries. The trolley will stop near the Burlington Ice Cream Shop before heading back.

Walk to Sunset Point

Longer-distance walkers will appreciate the two-mile walk to Sunset Point and back starting from the canal center Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. The trail is easy, mostly level and should offer nice fall colors to walkers. Meditation walk along the Wabash

For those whose bodies and minds need a break, enjoy a silent walk along the Wabash River Oct. 28. Meet at Trailhead Park at 2 p.m. to meditate and meander. Call David McCain at (765) 564-2258 for information.

Pick up the pace

Lois Johnston will lead a moderatly-paced walk starting from the canal park Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. The stride, while not much quicker than that of other more leisure-oriented strolls, will produce a scenic experience coupled with a beneficial aerobic workout.

Whom to contact

Interested persons can call the Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretive Center at (765) 564-2870 for information about any or all events listed, or call the canal information line at 564-6572 to hear a recorded informational message.
