Looking Back
An innovative and economical process that reclaims and recycles old asphalt paved county roads has produced both mixed results and a few skeptics in Carroll County. Neighbors from CR500 North in Tippecanoe Township complained to the Commissioners that recent work on their road left the pavement virtually impossible to travel. It was reported that the work done produced a washboard-like rippled effect rendering havoc on vehicles and pedestrians alike. Remedial work, including grading and more gravel, done after the initial recycling made the condition worse. 25 YEARS AGO For the second time in nine years and the second in the 11- game series, Carroll's Cougars beat the Delphi Oracles Friday night, 12-6. Carroll's tri-captains, all seniors, played a big role in the victory. Dave Lambert led the defense with 4 quarterback sacks, 3 primary tackles and 2 assists. On offense he made the key block that enabled junior Tim Williams to break down the sidelines for 43 yards and the TD. Dave Mann got the Cougars on the scoreboard first with a 30 yard field goal. Mann completed 5 of 10 passes for 72 yards and rushed for 42 yards on 6 carries. Tom Hall had 3 unassisted tackles, 3 assists and 1 pass interception from his defensive tackle position. 50 YEARS AGO While no major mishaps transpired over the Labor Day weekend, the speed timer, which was set up at the south edge of Delphi on highway 421 on Sunday afternoon, did a brisk business. State and City police make 24 traffic arrests for excessive speed. Average speed of the violators was from 43 to 49 miles per hour in the 30-mile zone. 75 YEARS AGO Two roads have been completed in Carroll county. The Swartz road in Clay township was finished. The Harrison road connecting the road north of Camden with the Rockfield road, was also completed. This thoroughfare was only 3-4 mile long and will probably be used quite a bit as the Delphi-Camden road in the future. These may be the last two built for some time as a moratorium has been declared on the three mile gravel road law. Two are still pending. These are the Earl Hildebrand road in Adams and the David Maxwell road in Jackson. 100 YEARS AGO The 21st annual reunion of Carroll county soldiers' and sailors' picnic association will be held in Delphi on Thursday. Arrangements are being perfected to make this the most interesting and enjoyable meeting in the history of the association. The meetings are not confined to old soldiers exclusively. The soldiers of all wars, their families and friends and the public generally are invited. An excellent program will be arranged and a big dinner served. No collection will be taken up or aid asked from visitors. |
