Speak English
By Pastor Dan Butcher
(Galatians 3:28 and Romans 10:12)

I was driving back to my home in Burlington when I came upon a bumper sticker that read "Speak English." Bold statement!

This statement reflects the views of many who reside in Carroll County. I must admit to you that deep down I also have a conviction that any citizen of any given society or nation has an ethical obligation to learn and use its accepted language to assure successful communication between all. Without communication we will be lost.

I must also admit to you that on a similar journey home to Burlington I stopped at aMcDonald's on the outskirts of Indianapolis. The gentleman who was taking my order was having a terrible time. It was a simple order and he kept repeating it back to me in broken English, unable to complete the task.

I got frustrated and wasn't my usual kind and patient self. I got to the window and thought about telling that kid off - that he needed to work harder at his communication skills!

When I got to the window I saw a man about my age. He was perspiring and trying his dead-level best. He told me he was sorry and that he was trying. My heart poured out to him.

At this stage of my life, I would not desire to trade places with him. I hurt for him. Yes, I still think he will need to work on those communication skills. However many of us need to do the same and we have spoken this language for a lifetime.

The scripture is clear that God is not a respecter of race or gender - that he sees the hearts and souls of each child or adult.

Please attempt to be patient as we communicate the need for all of us to be on the same page. Always realize that racial equality is paramount to the Christian faith.

I know only one language and it is English. I pray I learn to speak it with love.

Thank you. See ya in church. Dan Butcher is pastor at Crossroads Christian.
