Howard M. Gish

Dr. Howard M. Gish, 82, of Lafayette, formerly of Brookston, passed away Aug. 24, 2007, at 1:19 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette.

He was born April 27, 1925, in Camden to the late Floyd and Thelma Snider Gish. He graduated from Camden High School in 1943, where he won many awards including the state Latin contest. His marriage was to Margaret Louise Osterman in 1948, and she survives.

Dr. Gish first attended Purdue University, then graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1949. He served his internship in 1950 at Methodist Hospital.

He was stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Maine as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command from 1954 to 1956.

He was in private practice in Brookston for 20 years before leaving to become head of the St. Elizabeth Hospital Emergency Department for 12 years. Dr. Gish and another physician then started the urgent care unit at Arnett Clinic, where he practiced until his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of Mt. Zion Order of the Eastern Star, Camden Masonic Lodge #211, and local, state and national medical societies. He was also member of Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, both in Indianapolis.

Dr. Gish enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Surviving with his wife are two brothers, Dr. Charles Gish (wife: Treva) of Brookston and Floyd "Jack" Gish (wife: Nancy) of Delphi.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Louise Gish.

Services were held Aug. 27 at First Baptist Church in Camden. The Rev. Dr. Leland D. McReynolds officiated. Burial was at Camden Cemetery.
