Raised, but not in place
The 1905 Stearns Bridge has been assembled and lifted with a crane. Sometime in the next couple of weeks, two cranes will place it over the canal behind Pizza King and Dairy Queen in Delphi. Volunteers pictured above are (l-r) Ron Dust of Chicago, formerly of Monticello; AlAuffart, Cutler; Vern Cripe, Delphi; crane owner Dave Schlick, Logansport; Dave Smith, Delphi; and Roy Patrick (back to camera), Lafayette. After the bridge is in place, two-inch oak planking will be cut from logs to make the deck. When the sawmill is operating, the volunteers will need extra help to take the planks out to the bridge floor and nail them down. A Saturday in mid-September will be announced later for the task. To volunteer, call 765-412-4308.
