Temporary signal installed on U.S. 421 for construction work
Comet staff report

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) installed a temporary signal at U.S. 421, State Road 18 and State Road 39 to assist with the temporary run-around during the intersection improvement construction project. The signal was turned on Monday.

In early June construction began on the intersection improvement project that is converting the triangle intersection with merge lanes into a "T" intersection with a three-way stop. Designated left and right turn lanes will also be constructed on SR 18 and U.S. 421 during this project. Traffic is currently restricted to loads wider than 11 feet and directed to a posted detour. Eastbound SR 18 traffic will take U.S. 421 north to U.S. 24 east to SR 29 south back to SR 18; westbound SR 18 traffic is directed to SR 29 north to U.S. 24 west to U.S. 421 south back to SR 18. Southbound U.S. 421 traffic is directed to U.S. 24 east to SR 25 south back to U.S. 421; northbound U.S. 421 traffic is directed to SR 25 north to U.S. 24 west back to U.S. 421.

The speed limit has been reduced through the work zone from 50 mph to 45 mph. INDOT reminds drivers to consider the safety of road construction workers and to always drive with caution through highway work zones. The project is expected to be completed by November.
