Bassett & Talbert's has a fresh new look. The 53-year old business has re-opened with an all-new gas station, convenience store, and Blimpie's restaurant. The restaurant has seating for 32 in addition to its carry-out service. Bassett & Talbert's is family owned and operated.

Evening users of the walking trail have a partially lighted path in their future. The Council approved the purchase of 60 lights to be installed approximately 50 feet from each other along the walking path starting on the east side of the trail. The cost will be $38,505.

The RobertAyres farm of Rt. 1 Bringhurst was featured on the cover of this week's Indiana Prairie Farmer. Although the photo was taken during corn silage harvest, the article revealed the top dairy operation run by Bob and his sons, Meredith and Rick. The Ayres family milks from 120-160 cows on their 638-acre farm with the herd yielding 16,000 pounds of milk per cow.

A 20 pound cantaloupe which measures 35 inches in circumference was grown by Marivn and Vera Strain who reside 3 1/2 miles south of Delphi. Even though the Strains said they didn't do anything different with their garden this year, something went right. They have two more at home on the vine that are as big or bigger!

50 YEARS AGO Despite the fact that it is now being used as a bunk house for drivers employed with the Smith Construction Company, the old school building at Bringhurst is still making felt its educational influence. The school, unaided by mere humans who would have doubted the practicality of such a thing, is conducting an experiment in Botany in the basement and has successfully produced 35 gray sponge mushrooms. We saw the proof of this when one of the drivers living in the school, brought two healthy specimens into the Journal office. He is still amazed at finding mushrooms in July and we joined him for a short session of head-shaking before carefully placing our two mushrooms in water-just in case there is steak for dinner tonight.

A number of farmers over the county have been cutting the weeds along their place. This has greatly assisted passing motorists besides saving possible accidents. These farmers who have done this thing are to be thanked by all the people of the county for this splendid service.

Monday morning there began a busy time at the post office, for the mail must be weighed and counted. This weighing and counting will not be limited to mail matter only but will include mail pouches and all other matters with which the clerks have to do. The weighing will be done by the clerks and the county will be distributed among the carriers, each carrier keeping account of the number of pieces he carries and collects. It will continue until January 1.
