Meetings Members of Wednesday Forum met at Solomon's Grille for lunch and theirAugust meeting. Hazel Mullin presented "The Side of aBarn" duringwhich she told the history of theMail Pouch Tobacco Co., which advertised on the sides of barns. Mail Pouch focused its advertisements on rural areas and small towns. Indiana was one of the states targeted. The Federal Highway Beautification Act of 1965 forced the removal of most of the signs. In 1974 the lawwas amended to exclude barns with advertising of historic or artistic significance.A few such barns remain today. Mullin also told of an art project called Barn Quilts of Grundy County, Iowa.Approximately 40 quiltswere painted onweathered barns, aging corn cribs and rural outbuildings. Paintings ranged in size from 64 to 144 square feet. Patterns were selected to reflect each area's agricultural history. The murals attract a steady streamof visitorswho followthe county's seven-town, 64-mile "quilt loop." |
