Working with disruptive youth subject of Lafayette area workshop
Comet staff report

The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is offering a workshop to help Lafayette area youthserving professionals work with kids who exhibit disruptive behaviors.

Youth workers, teachers, community leaders, youth ministers and others who impact the lives of youth in the Lafayette area can register for the workshop, "Working with Kids with Disruptive Behaviors," to be presented from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., 5500 State Road 38 East, Lafayette.

The workshop offers a new approach to dealing with children who lack critical thinking skills and have trouble managing their mood and behavior. Youth workers will learn why these kids do what they do, the limited effectiveness of punishments and rewards, and how to use one's self to influence behavior.

Dennis Bumgarner from the Chapel Hill Center for Brief Therapy is the instructor. Bumgarner is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist and has presented numerous training workshops for therapists, counselors, school personnel and businesses across the country on a variety of topics related to human behavior.

There is a cost for the training. Individuals can save $5 per session by registering for this or other IYI trainings online at www.iyi.org/training_ registration. Continuing Education Hours through the National Association of Social Workers and the Indiana Association of Prevention Professionals are available for the workshop.
