Florence Bell to be 100

Florence Bell
Florence Thomas Bell will celebrate her 100th birthday at an open house hosted by her family.

The event will be Aug. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Deer Creek Community Center.

Mrs. Bell was born Aug. 12, 1907. One of six children, her parents were Lewis and Carrie Thomas. She has two living sisters, Agnes Hanson of Kokomo and Edna Trueb of Logansport. Three brothers are deceased.

She spent most of her childhood in the Burlington area. Her first school was a oneroom schoolhouse called "Possum Trot." She said they carried water and all drank from one cup. After attending there for two years, she went to the Koro school to complete grade school.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1925. After graduation, she went to work for a hosiery factory in Indianapolis, where they made real silk hosiery.

Mrs. Bell graduated from Indianapolis Methodist School of Nursing in 1938. She went to work for Logansport Memorial Hospital and was head nurse for several years. After retiring from the hospital, she worked for Dr. Hockhalter for a few years.

She married Charles Mc- Dowell in 1947. He died in 1950. She then married Ansel Bell in 1956. He died in 1980.

She was a member of the Burlington Methodist Church but attended the Baptist Temple in Logansport, where she has lived most of her life.

Her hobbies have been traveling, knitting, and reading poetry (which she still enjoys).
