Sheriff's department solves local heist quickly

The day of July 17 probably took a different turn than expected for two 19-year-old White County residents. They most likely did not realize how quickly local law enforcement officials could act to solve a crime.

A break-in at Bresnahan's Restaurant in Pittsburg was discovered early by the owners and reported to the Carroll County Sheriff's Department later that morning. Detectives Steve Mullin and Kevin Hammond were assigned to investigate.

"We had certain information from the crime scene which led us to a Delphi resid ence," Mullin said. "When we knocked on the door, we discovered one of the suspects."

A search warrant was issued out of Carroll Circuit Court by Judge Donald Currie around 3 p.m. for the Delphi residence, located on the corner of Wabash and Franklin streets. Several cases of beer, approximately 40 bottles of liquor, cash and rolled coins were confiscated.

Cody A. Talbert was apprehended at the residence when the warrant was served. Mullin said Nicklaus J. Wertz turned himself into authorities later in the day. Both men were charged with Class C Felony Burglary.

The investigation continued when the Carroll County detectives visited the Talbert residence in Monticello, with the help of Det. Tim McFadden of the Monticello Police Department. More evidence was discovered there, according to Mullin.

"We take it very seriously when people break into our local businesses," Mullin concluded. "We want to keep that kind of activity out of our county."
