As promised…
Chief of the Eel River Indian Tribe Mike Floyd promised in March a portion of the profits from the sales of two recent books, "Eel River Tribe" and "Family of Honor-l'Anguille Snakes in the Grass" would be used to fund scholarships for tribal youth. Floyd and the tribe made good on that promise in June when scholarships were given to several children, including twoyear old Emmett Lavender of Star City. The youngster received an educational scholarship for $100 annually from now until he turns 18 years old. Children who are 11 years old or older must write an essay and be active in cultural activities to be considered for the award. Those 10 and younger only must be recommended for the award. A total of $800 was awarded in June. Pictured with Emmett, from left to right, are his father Joe, tribal elder Wayne Jackson in white, spiritual leader Jerry Ramsey in red and Floyd.
