Meetings Members of Wednesday Forum met at the home of Martha Justice for the July meeting. Jan Hathaway gave a presentation regarding the settling of Jamestown. In June 1606, King James I granted a charter to London entrepreneurs The Virginia Company to establish a satellite English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. In December of that year, 108 men sailed from London with instructions to settle Virginia, find gold and locate a water route to the Orient. The group landed on the southern fringe of present-day Chesapeake Bay, site of Jamestown, on May 14, 1607. Hathaway explained instead of finding gold, settlers struggled with Indian culture and the environment. May 2007 marked the 400th anniversary of the settlement.
