Cutler youth is finalist to win a Quarter Horse
Comet staff report

Maizie Wickersham, a member of the Young Wranglers 4-H Club, has been selected as one of ten finalists for the opportunity to be awarded a Quarter Horse yearling filly, One Hot Coastal, to further her 4-H career.

Maizie is the 12-year-old daughter of Shawn and Windy Wickersham, Cutler. She is a four-year member of Carroll County 4-H, having been enrolled with the 4-H Horse and Pony project for four years.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Indiana Quarter Horse Association (IQHA) 4-H Horse Award. In 1968, the IQHA developed an award that would provide recognition to ten deserving 4-H horse/pony members and provide one 4-Her each year the opportunity to own and train a registered Quarter Horse. Today, the association averages 50 to 60 applications on a yearly basis from 4-H youth throughout Indiana. The application consists of ten essay questions ranging from what 4-H has meant to the applicant to describing the proper care, health and grooming procedures of an equine program.

The IQHA 4-H Horse Award Committee reviews those applications and selects ten finalists to participate in an interview during the Indiana State Fair in August. A three-member panel will judge the finalists on Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis. From those ten finalists, one 4-H youth will take home a registered Quarter Horse yearling to continue his/her 4-H experience.
