Richard L. Smith

Richard L. Smith, 78, of Camden, died at 9:35 p.m. June 21, 2007, at Woodbridge Healthcare Center, Logansport.

Born Feb. 18, 1929, in Washington Township, Carroll County, he was the son of Lyman and Dorothy Bernice Shanks Smith. He graduated from Deer Creek High School in 1947 and attended Purdue University. He was married on May 15, 1955, at Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church to Patricia A. Downham, who preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 2005.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Korea.

Mr. Smith was a shipping clerk at Rockwell from 1966 until his retirement in 1988. He also worked for the Carroll County Highway Department and the Indiana State Highway Department. He drove a bus for Deer Creek School.

He was a member of Deer Creek Presbyterian Church and attended Faith Lutheran Church.

He was an avid collector of antique tractors and a member of the Carroll County Antique Tractor Club.

Surviving are two sons, James R. Smith and Robert Smith (wife: Bunti) of Logansport; a sister, Jean Heckathorn of Logansport; a brother-in-law, David Downham (wife: Dawn) of Logansport; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Shriver of Logansport, Lois Gibbs of new Jersey, and Jane Penn of Camden; two granddaughters, Amber Grandstaff (husband: Travis) of Logansport and Leanna Smith of Logansport; a great-granddaughter, Jayden Grandstaff of Logansport; and a great-grandson, Noah Grandstaff of Logansport.

A son, Thomas, preceded him in death.

Services were held Monday at Cree Funeral Home, Camden. Pastor Sandra Hutchens and Pastor Jeff Tomson officiated. Burial with military gravesite rites by Camden American Legion was at Hopewell Cemetery, Deer Creek.
