Mamie Smith Pilarski, 94, died June 3, 2007, at Bloomington, Ill., where she had resided for many years. She was born in 1913 in Carroll County to Glen and Myrtle Smith. In 1947, she married J.F. Pilarski, who died in 1981. Mrs. Pilarski was the first woman to play an instrument in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Surviving are two daughters, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a cousin, Jean Ballard Smith, of Flora. Graveside services were held June 7 at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Flora.
