Dry summer days yield various effects
Since much of the spring work is winding down and wheat harvest is still a couple of weeks away, farmers are encouraged to come to Flora June 22, at 9:30 a.m. to the 4- H Exhibit Building for a morning outlook meeting by Dr. Chris Hurt, Purdue University Extension Specialist. Following Dr. Hurt, Dr. Fred Whitford, Purdue University Extension Specialist, will explain how farmers can save on semi truck plate expense. He will also be available for questions concerning pesticide issues. These two specialists always make for an entertaining meeting while they inform us with timely information. Homeowners have had struggles with trees this season. Many problems were associated with a rapid drop in temperature in a previously warm winter season. This created freeze cracks that opened the door to disease and insect activity. There are many bagworms still present on the conifers. Biorational pesticides will work on the larva at this time to protect non-target species; however, this should be done immediately as eggs may have already hatched. Sunday afternoon, corn leaves were rolling in response to the dry soils and hot weather. It is important to inspect insect activity when the crops are entering a period of stress in the season. Plants should be checked on a regular basis to identify increased insect feeding or leaf deterioration. The earlier a problem is spotted the greater chance of tree survival. Remember, trees are stressed during periods of dry weather and need water. It is recommended that soil be watered slowly over a long period to ensure a thorough soaking of surrounding soil. 4-H is in full swing and the 4-Hers are very busy with projects. Last Saturday, Carroll County Open Beef Show had a great turnout with over ninety head of cattle in the show and many participating showmen. Carroll County was well represented by its youth as they did a great job with their cattle. Come out to the Carroll County 4-H fair during July 13-20 and support our Carroll County youth. Be sure to attend the next horticulture series program June 20 at 9 a.m. in the 4-H building to discover the "Seven Steps to a Perfect Yard." The Purdue Master Gardner program for this fall will be scheduled at that time. For more information contact Paul Marcellino at (765) 564-3169 or pmarcellino@purdue.edu. |
