Community reading program begins second year
Selected reading for 2007 is "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. The MSNBC columnist wrote the memoir based on experiences from her upbringing. She explained candidly the difficulties of growing up in a complex, dysfunctional environment and how she still feels deep affection toward her family. Copies of the book are available for checkout by any county resident at the libraries. A series of summer and autumn programs will be offered to encourage discussion and to complement different aspects of the story. Call or visit a participating library for information. Modeled after the One Book, One Community programs duplicated nationwide, the program represents the libraries' efforts to encourage the entire community to read the same book in order to build a better community through reading and sharing ideas. Approximately 150 residents borrowed last year's selection, "Crow Lake," and more than 200 attended book discussions and related programs at all three libraries. |
