Festival to celebrate transportation history Transportation has been a key element to growth for Carroll County. For many years, types of transportation have been developed, modified and sometimes forgotten as new modes of transport surface. Those who value the historic significance of transportation will have an opportunity to experience methods old and new when Delphi Main Street Society celebrates the area's rich transportation history during the Delphi Heritage Transportation Festival Saturday and Sunday at various locations in and around the city. Visitors can experience horse-drawn carriage rides, old-time school hack and trolley tours of displays and activities. Canal boat and canoe floats will be available at Wabash & Erie Canal Park and will offer lazy rides on the longest stretch of watered canal in the state. Visitors can use the canoe float time Saturday to practice for canoe races to be Sunday. Trolleys will run loops continuously both days around the canal park, downtown Delphi, Delphi airport and Riley Park. A one dollar admission charge will cover all tour rides. Beginning at 10 a.m. both days at the canal park, eventgoers can see historic transportation displays, experience musical entertainment and take riding tours. A bike rally is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Downtown visitors will be able to experience modern and historic transportation displays, displays by local businesses and craftsmen, musical performances and tours of the Lathrope-Ruffing Opera House and the Carroll County Historic Museum. Delphi Airport will host the annual Fly-In on Sunday. Visitors can enjoy an early breakfast, see aviation displays and talk with pilots as they come and go in assorted aircraft. Helicopter rides will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the airport. On Sunday, airplane rides will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon. Both require an extra charge. Riley Park will also host events on Sunday. Lafayettebased radio station WASK will be live on the air from noon to 2 p.m., live entertainment will be offered from 2 to 5 p.m. and a cruise-in will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Call (765) 564-6692 or email jhowell@cityofdelphi.org for more information. |
