Special Olympians win gold at Indiana Summer Games

Thirty-six year-old Doug McCarty of Flora earned four gold medals in track events at the Special Olympic Summer Games held at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, over the weekend.

McCarty took first place in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter runs. He also earned a bronze medal in the 1500.

Also winning gold medals in track and field events were Destiny Lucas, Josh Hartman and Ciera Lucas, all in meter runs, and Shawnda Gidel, 25 meter motorized wheelchair.

Earning silver medals were Bethany, Jesse and Stephen Cadwallader. Emily Downham won a bronze medal.

Gold medal winners in bowling were Cindy Hartman and Darlene Goyer. Jessica Hartman and Ashley Walker won bronze medals. Fourth place ribbons went to Jesse Collins and Steve Wolf.

Bocce gold medal winners were Shawna Sherman and Cary Walters. Ron Rice and Diana Williams won fourth place ribbons.

Carroll County's volleyball team of Rita Bane, Charles Fry Sr., Chuck Fry Jr., Richard Goyer, Jessie Knight, Angel and Sabrina Lucas, Cody Martin and Junie Sherman placed fourth.

Two-thousand four hundred athletes competed in the Games, while 2,000 volunteers and coaches helped with the event.

Accompanying Carroll County's athletes were the following coaches: Track and Frield - Mary McCarty, Gale Downham, Donna McWhorter, Rebecca and Mike Cadwallader. Bowling - Cindy Hartman and Caryl Sherman. Bocce - Kay Goyer. Volleyball - Bob Yates and Jean Lear.

ISU has hosted the Games since 1970. This year's theme was "Dream Big." Honorary chairman was Governor Mitch Daniels.
