Wide load detour begins June 8
SR 18 and US 421 intersection improvement restricts traffic
Comet staff report

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will temporarily restrict traffic at the intersection of State Road 18 and U.S. 421 in Carroll County beginning June 8 as construction progresses.

Jack Isom Construction began work on the $2.2 million intersection improvement the week of May 28. The project will convert the current triangle intersection with merge lanes into aTintersection with a three-way stop. Designated left and right turn lanes will be constructed on SR 18 and US 421.

A detour for loads wider than 11 feet will be in effect from June 8 through November. The wide load detour for eastbound SR 18 traffic will be to take US 421 north to US 24 east to SR 29 south and back to SR 18. The detour for westbound SR 18 traffic will be to take SR 29 north to US 24 west to US 421 south and back to SR 18. The detour for US 421 southbound traffic will be to take US 24 east to SR 25 south and back to US 421. The detour for northbound US 421 traffic will be to take SR 25 north to US 24 west and back to US 421.

The speed limit has been reduced through the work zone from 50 mph to 45 mph. Message boards are posted to inform drivers of the construction and reduced speed limits.
