Oracle hurler keeps Cougars at bay The Delphi baseball team was host to their county rival Carroll Monday night in their second meeting of the year. The Oracles came out on top, winning 10-6. In the first inning, Andy Flora led off for the Oracles with a single. Mike Myers followed with another single. Coy Pennington reached on a Carroll error and bases were loaded with no outs. Kyle Benson, the Carroll pitcher, struck the next three batters out and no runs were scored. In the third inning the Cougars got on the board first. Benson singled and advanced to third on an Oracle error. Justin Brown walked to make runners at first and third, then Greg Manning reached on an error scoring Benson. Brett Dinger doubled to plate both Brown and Manning. In the bottom of the third the Oracles played small ball and put up an eight-run inning. Myers hit a single and stole second. Pennington doubled to score Myers. Dustin Oliver singled. Andrew Cebulla squeezed Pennington in and received a hit on the perfect bunt. Bender singled to plate yet another run. Then Braden Atwood squeezed again to plate Oliver. Gerran Wilson doubled down the first base line to plate two more Oracle runs. Matt Lewis followed with a single of his own. Myers collected his second hit of the inning with a triple, knocking in another run and Pennington also with his second double of the inning. The score at the start of the fifth inning as 9-3 because the Oracles added another run in the fourth on another Carroll miscue. The Cougars scored one in the fifth when lead off hitter John Phalen walked and scored on a fielder's choice. In the sixth inning the Oracles scored another run when Montero doubled to left and scored on Bender's single. The Cougars scored once in the seventh when Benson singled and scored on Brown's single. Cebulla picked up the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs and striking out six. Oracle Classic The Oracles finished third in the Oracle Classic over the weekend. They lost to Seeger 3-0 and beat Clinton Central 5-4. Bender pitched against Seeger and gave up only one earned run. Pennington had two hits in the first game. In game 2, the Oracles put Beckett on the mound and he received his first varsity win. Atwood had two hits for the Oracles. Cebulla got the save on the mound. Vs. Twin Lakes The Oracles opened Hoosier Conference play last week at Twin Lakes. Behind the pitching of Bender the Oracles won 9- 0. Bender threw 63 pitches in the complete game shut out and allowed only four base hits. The Oracles started off scoring 2 runs in the first when Oliver doubled off the wall to score Myers and Pennington. The Oracles added another in the fourth when Atwood led off the inning with a single. Bender walked. Wilson bunted the two over and Lewis singled to left. The big inning occurred in the fifth when the Oracles scored six runs on three hits and four walks. Oliver had three hits in the game and Pennington, two. The Oracles had ten hits on the day. |
