Canal Earth Day is April 21
Volunteers needed
Comet staff report

This Saturday, April 21, is an opportunity for volunteers of all ages to come together for Project W.E.E.D or "Wabash & Erie Earth Day" beginning at 9 a.m. at Canal Park in Delphi.

If it rains, the alternate date is April 28. In the past, these Earth Day workdays have attracted 50-75 volunteers. This year the goal is to top 100 workers.

Groups like 4-H, Scouts, and church groups, as well as individuals are invited. Children should work with parents or teachers. Volunteer "captains" will be onsite to supervise specific jobs, and a work list will be available.

The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a flag raising and orientation at Canal Park before breaking into work groups.

In Canal Park many places need work, including the flowerbeds.

Most of the work near Pizza Hut/Dairy Queen relates to picking up sticks and debris associated with the extensive work being done where a trail bridge will be placed later this year.

Work crews may go to various locations on other trails that may require driving to the sites and then returning for lunch. Those who bring their own hand tools will be given instructions and a map showing where to report for work. Tools should have the owner's name on them.

Volunteers are advised to dress appropriately - work clothes and shoes, gloves and other protective wear. No pets are allowed.

Workers get a free lunch served at noon at the Canal Park shelter by the local Psi Iota Xi sorority.

Check the Canal Hotline for last minute weather cancellation notice by calling 765-564- 6572.

The Wabash & Erie Canal sponsors this event with support from the USDA/NRCS "EARTH TEAM."
