Bessie R. Crain

Bessie Rosaltha Crain, 88, of Burlington, died at 7:40 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2007, at St. Anthony Health Care Center in Lafayette.

Born July 4, 1918, in Colfax, Ill., she was the daughter of Robert Roy and Nellie Ellen Gillan Davis. She graduated from Walton High School in 1936. On Oct. 14, 1939, in Walton, she married Raymond D. Crain, who preceded her in death on April 1, 2005.

Mrs. Crain was a homemaker. She helped her husband on their farm at Burlington since 1942. She also worked at the Carroll County License Branch in Delphi in the late 1960s and retired from Wagoner Medical Center in Burlington in the late 1970s.

She was a member since 1954 of the Burlington United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, mushroom hunting, sewing, and crocheting. She was an avid basketball and NASCAR fan.

She belonged to the Walton Euchre Bunch for 68 years and to the Burlington Euchre Club for over 30 years.

Surviving are three children, Barbara A. Caldwell (husband: J.R.) of Lafayette, Ron L. Crain (wife: Sandy) of Indianapolis, and Marilyn R. Wells (husband: John) of Lafayette; three sisters, Karen Sue Sutton (husband: Jim) of LaPorte, Janet Platt (husband: Bill) of Florida, and Joan Mc- Clusky of Mississippi; a brother, Wayne Davis; six grandchildren, Richard Wilcox, Laura Lowry Garth, Kenny Lowry, Tiffany Crain Conway, Shelly Wells, and Mary Speiser; and 12 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Merle Davis of Alexandria, Dick Davis of Walton, and Robert Roy "Doc" Davis Jr., of Tennessee.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Neptune Funeral Home, 44 Michigan St., Burlington. Pastor Chuck Rockey will officiate and burial will be at Burlington Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
