DCSC board faces difficult decision

It takes courage to adhere to one's convictions. When someone believes a new course of action is better than an old one and steps up to the plate to suggest the change, there is sure to be criticism.

This is what happened to Delphi Community School Corporation Superintendent Ralph Walker this week.

Walker came to this community last fall from a successful stint in the Lebanon school district. He took a look at the two elementary schools in the Delphi district with different eyes than those used for the past 13 years. And he saw some things that could be changed to cut costs and enhance the educational experience of all elementary students.

Walker offered suggestions to the corporation board of school trustees, who answer to the voters. Those board members will ultimately decide if changes will be made.

Many patrons and residents in the Camden area are vehemently opposed to any change that involves relocating classes to Hillcrest Elementary.

And many from the Hillcrest area are just as in favor of a move as those in Camden are against it.

No matter how this issue is resolved, it is only right that the school community as a whole steps back, takes a breath and tries to understand all points of view before a decision is made.
