Clara J. McDermitt
Clara J. P e f f l e y M c D e r - mitt, 59, of D e l p h i , p a s s e d a w a y March 8, 2007, at 1:20 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette. She had been in failing health for the past eight months, and in the hospital for one week.

She was born April 18, 1947, in Lafayette, to Charles and Esther Shaw Peffley. Her first marriage was to Jake Smith on Sept. 2, 1966, in Lafayette. He preceded her in death June 13, 1997. On Aug. 27, 2003, in Delphi, she married Philip W. McDermitt and he survives.

Mrs. McDermitt was a 1965 graduate of Jefferson High School in Lafayette.

She worked at the Delphi IGA grocery store for the past nine years and was a homemaker. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, playing bingo and mushroom hunting.

Surviving are a son, Roger Smith (fiancée: Peggy Scowden) of Delphi; two daughters, April Shaw and Kim Ash (husband: Jimmy), all of Delphi; a stepdaughter, Lori Brier (husband: Mark) of Pine Village; a stepson, Philip M. Mc- Dermitt of Indiana; three sisters, Katherine Bickett (husband: Glen) and Ruthann Lerch (husband: Lonnie), all of Lafayette, and Rosemary McGuire (husband: Irving) of Mikado, Mich.; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and special friends, Connie Neal and Brian Shaw.

Services were held Sunday at Abbott Funeral Home in Delphi. The Rev. Todd Ladd officiated. Burial was at Pleasant Run Cemetery in rural Carroll County.
