Takes exception with remark At the Feb. 19 commissioner's meeting a noted Carroll County business person stated retired persons do not contribute to the economy. As a retired county resident (taxpaying for 45 years), I deem this remark a blatant, absurd, disrespectful attack directed toward retired senior citizens. I also maintain retired property owners, receiving income from pensions, annuities, financial investments, and other sources, provide more to the county economy through their tax payments and in-county purchases than persons employed in the county whose residences are located in adjacent counties. Although my residence is in Carroll County, it is located nearer business districts in Clinton and Tippecanoe counties. Regardless of this proximity, I have purchased the following merchandise in Carroll County - autos, tires, gasoline, groceries, major appliances, auto and property maintenance, etc. It should be noted, in many instances incounty costs exceeded those available in the other business communities. I purchased from county merchants with the belief my purchases helped the local (county) economy and would be appreciated. In view of this person's statement, it didn't and wasn't. In the absence of a public apology to all retired persons, perhaps I will direct my purchases to surrounding business districts. Perhaps this person should review his perspective and consider the positive aspects and attributes retired persons offer our community. Other counties actively solicit and encourage retirees to locate in their respective counties. Monthly I receive pamphlets extolling their services and virtues, requesting I relocate. Perhaps our county and business leaders should pursue an agenda welcoming retirees, via establishment of facilities and services tailored to their needs. This would be beneficial, adding diversity to the economy and providing an addition to our tax base.
I apologize to the businesses that the removal of my support will affect, I am sorry, but I refuse to provide unappreciated support. |
