Carroll Elementary celebrated Read Across America Day on March 2.

This year marked the 103rd birthday of Dr. Seuss. Carroll students also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the publishing of "The Cat in the Hat."

Dr. Seuss was challenged by an author friend of his to write a story for first graders that would be both exciting and contain words that first graders could read. Meeting the challenge, Dr. Seuss wrote "The Cat in the Hat," with only 236 different words in the book.

During Carroll's celebration, students read Dr. Seuss books and had a book swap where they brought in a book of their own and traded with another student. They also watched Dr. Seuss movies, sent birthday cards via the Internet to Dr. Seuss, and listened to a special reading of "The Cat in the Hat." Teachers wore their "Cat hats" and read aloud to students in their classrooms.
