Carroll Schools to host wheelchair BB tourney to benefit local students Carroll Schools have four children who depend on wheelchairs for their everyday mobility. To promote awareness of the diseases affecting these students and to raise funds to benefit the students, Carroll is hosting a 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball tournament on March 10. The tourney will begin at 9 a.m. in the Carroll Elementary gym. Muscular dystrophy (MD) and osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) are the particular diseases affecting the four Carroll students. The school and community can participate by forming teams for the tourney or by attending as spectators. Teams will play two tenminute halves of wheelchair basketball and are guaranteed at least two games. T-shirts will be given to all team members, and winning teams will receive trophies. Wheelchairs will be provided for those who need them. Registration forms can be picked up at Carroll Elementary, Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School, and the Carroll County Comet. The registration form and team entry fee must be turned in to Carroll Elementary or Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School by Friday, March 2. For more information, contact Kathy Sanders or Jenelle Gish at the elementary. Admission for spectators is a free will donation. Half of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which helps the Carroll students along with many others with MD, and the other half will go toward the purchase of a much needed wheelchair for one of the students. "Community is about caring and togetherness, and this event will bring people together for lots of fun and for a good cause," Gish said. |
