Carroll County's new highway supervisor, named on Monday last week, received an initial "baptism of fire" which undoubtedly made him wonder if he really wanted the position. Robert Delaplane, a Republican, was named by the Commissioners less than a day-and-a half before he worked all night because of a snow storm. Helped by Commissioner Byron Jervis, who stayed until 3 a.m. Wednesday, and Commissioner Junior Maxwell, all night and until midday on Wednesday, Delaplane, through it all, manned the garage at Flora as his workers did their jobs to the best of their ability.

Being nice to people seems to be a habit. Over at Flora a telephone communication system has been established between the Flora school and the home of Miss Nancy Garrison, Flora senior, enabling her to continue class work while recovering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. After Miss Garrison returned home from the St. Joseph hospital, Logansport, the communications system was set up between her school English classroom and her home. She will be a member of the 1957 graduating class of the school.

Mrs. Harriett Gros, chairman of the Washington bi-centinnial in Delphi, has requested that all the bells on the various churches and other buildings be rung at 12:00 noon on Monday, which is Washington's birthday. Citizens should celebrate with all the noise possible for these few minutes.
A value of $72.50 per acre has been fixed as the top assessment for land this year by county assessors from seven counties, including Carroll.
Claiming that electric light rates are too high, thirty citizens of Delphi have filed a petition with the public service commission asking a reduction of electric rates. The petition was filed by W.H. Bradshaw, president of the Delphi Body Works.
100 YEARS AGO The Burlington Ladies' Quartet, consisting of Mrs. Ethel Haun, Mrs. Anna Langolf and the Misses Edna and Lou Timmons, made quite a hit with their singing at the Tri-county Farmers' Institute at Middlefork Monday afternoon and evening and on the strength of this received and invitation to sing at the institute to be held at Frankfort and will in all probability accept. These ladies are highly praised wherever they go and with the push and straightforwardness which characterize their efforts it would be a matter of time only until they could rank among the best.
