Looking Back
Four Carroll County juniors attended U.S. Senator Richard Lugar's Symposium for "Tomorrow's Leaders" at the University of Indianapolis. They were Matthew Beale and Susan Stokdyk, DCHS students, and Amy Johnson and Meaghn Collins from Carroll. The day long program began with an address by Lugar on national and world affairs, and then students participated in their choice of 10 discussion groups. Delphi Oracle wrestler Ryan Freeman finished fifth at 140 lbs. last weekend in the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals in Indianapolis. 25 YEARS AGO After 22 years, Wilson's Store in Camden has come under new ownership and is now known as Parrett's Hardware Store. Dallas and Patti Wilson of Camden recently sold their interests in the store to Keith and Linda Parrett, also of Camden. The Parretts are making changes in the store and plan to carry some new items. A farmer, Parrett owns K & L Body Shop in Camden and Mrs. Parrett works at Camden Elementary School. The have five children. The Wilsons plan to enjoy retirement. 50 YEARS AGO Volunteer labor for building the pole barn 60x105, for housing livestock at the County 4-H Fair, will be under the supervision of Carroll County Farm Bureau Co Op, who were awarded bid for materials for this building by the Carroll County Commissioners. Charles Meade, building committee chairman, suggested that the 4-H director in each township get eight volunteer workers for one day in constructing the building. The building will be constructed on ground recently purchased by Flora Community Club and given to the county, which adjoins the present building on the north. 75 YEARS AGO At the opening of business at Burlington Saturday, a notice was posted in the front door of the Burlington State Bank, announcing that the institution had been closed temporarily. It developed that the action was taken to enable the bank to negotiate with its depositors an agreement whereby it would be empowered to restrict withdrawals for a specified period and thereby safeguard itself and its depositors against the dangers incident to a "run". The Bank will probably be opened either Friday or Saturday. About 400 stockholders and depositors of the bank met in a mass meeting at the Burlington school house. More than 80 per cent of the depositors signed waivers which said that they would not withdraw over 10 per cent of their money every three months. 100 YEARS AGO What is probably the biggest rabbit catch of the season is reported from the Camden vicinity. A crowd of nine men in one day killed 127 rabbits. Two of the men, Wm. Mills and Geo. Williamson, each killed 33. To get the game home, the rabbits were tied together and slung across poles which the men carried on their shoulders. |
