Four Carroll students sing in All-state choirs

Four students from Carroll sang with the best singers in the state on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20, at the Indiana Music Educators annual convention in Indianapolis.

Baritone Kurtis Robeson, Carroll eighth grader, was a member of the Middle School/Junior High Choir. He auditioned via recording to be picked for the honor. His performance on Jan. 19 was in the main ballrooms at the Convention Center before a packed house.

At the high school level, tenors Seth Pencek and Nick Jones were members of the Mixed Choir, and soprano Chelsea DeVos was chosen for the Women's Choir.

The high school students are chosen by live audition in the spring, almost a year before the January conference. The singers must sing their part of a chosen piece for a judge and then sight-read (sing at sight) three exercises written for the try-outs.

According to director Joe Spence, being a member of the Indiana All-State choirs is a tremendous honor, only achieved by a small percent of the students. He said it is the experience of a life-time, and many lasting relationships with students from other schools are developed.
